Take one look at the National Motocross Championship results, and it’s clear that Maddy Malan has come into the 2019 season swinging. As riders head to Bloemfontein for the third round of the premier series this weekend, the 22-year old will once again line up with the red plate and overall MX1 lead.

After his near impossible feat of winning the last round with a flat tyre, the question on everybody’s lips is ‘what is Maddy Malan going to do next?’.

We catch up with one of South Africa’s brightest motocross talents ahead of what is set to be another epic weekend of racing.

Take one look at the leader board, and it's clear you've come into this year with a new energy. What's changed this season?

I think I’ve just worked harder this year and come in with a calmer approach. I’m healthy and training really heard, but my mindset has also changed. I’m looking at the season as a bigger picture, and just putting the pieces together with every race. I don’t have to win every event to win the championship – it’s more about consistency and getting good starts. It’s also about keeping my head down and not getting complacent.

You're about to head back to Bloem, the same place where you suffered some bad luck in MX2 last year. How does that make you feel?

I’m really keen to get back there for redemption. Last year was a bit of a hiccup in the road, MX2 was a horror show! But that’s all good – I’ve got a fresh chance to make things right and I really enjoy this track.

What kind of approach do you plan on taking this time? Especially when you're trying to hold onto the red plate.

I think the track is going to be really deep and rutted. I need to get two solid starts and put myself in a good position to fight for the lead. I’m obviously hoping to get the holeshot, but also preparing to make quick passes if I have to.

Take us through a week of preparing for an MX National like the one?

I usually only ride once or twice in the week of the race – and the rest is more mental preparation. I like to go over the race in my head and think of all the scenarios that could happen. It’s kind of like ‘hoping for the best but preparing for the worst’ – but I always focus on making sure every situation has a positive outcome.

Looking at the competition this season, what do you think it's going to take to hang onto that MX1 Championship lead until the end?

It’s going to take a lot of work! I’m going to have to be really smart about it and play all my cards right. I can’t be ‘too eager’ – it’s a long season. I just need to soften the blow of the bad results, and capitalize on the good ones as best as I possibly can.
