Release from 14.10.2024
Budd impressed early when he set the second-fastest qualifying time aboard the Husqvarna FC 250 at round one, just 0.1s off claiming pole position. He finished P5 in his heat race and then was fifth in the first final of the weekend, but a crash in the second encounter saw him placed 12th overall.
Sunday saw Budd race forward to 11th in the first final, before a better start in the last SX2 race of the weekend saw him claim a well-earned fourth position, which in turn elevated him fifth position overall at round two. Those scores have him placed 10th in the championship standings.
Rhys Budd: "It was a bit of a rough weekend. I had a big crash yesterday and was pretty sore this morning. In the first main event on Sunday, I got off to a good start, but crashed in the first turn, but recovered to 11th. I turned it around for the second final, which I’m happy about. I got another good start and rode up the front, and came home in P4, so after a pretty tough weekend it was good to finish in fourth and that put me P5 overall. I’m looking forward to building and coming back stronger for the next round."
On debut in the SX1 class, Raceline Husqvarna T-Dub Racing Team teammate Jack Mather started well with fourth in his first heat race of the season on Saturday, before carding 14-11 finishes for 12th overall on his Husqvarna FC 450. He raced to 9-12 scores on Sunday despite being caught up in an incident at the beginning of the second final, again credited 12th overall.
Jack Mather: "We learnt a lot as the weekend progressed and we made some adjustments to the bike, which made me more comfortable today. Holeshotting my heat race was the highlight of the weekend for me – the bike was super-fast and was handling great. I got two good starts to Sunday’s finals, but unfortunately in the last one I got taken down in the first turn. It’s really cool racing the guys I’ve grown up watching and I’m excited to get after it again at Wollongong."
The AUSX championship now heads south to Wollongong, New South Wales, on Saturday, November 2nd, for the third round.
