The National Enduro Championship may have come to a close, but the race for enduro glory is far from over.

Amongst the list of elite riders already preparing for the 2019 Roof of Africa is Brett Swanepoel. For over a year his PEPSON PLASTICS HUSQVARNA RACING team stood by him as he faced a wrist injury that almost ended his career.

Without any reassurance that Swanepoel would even be able to ride again, the team supported the rider with the belief that he would make a return to his competitive racing form.

It’s been a season filled with ups and downs, but Swanepoel is on the bounce back.  With every race this season the rider has shown progress and finally gave his team a glimpse of the competitive racing form they believed he still had in him. At the final round of the National Enduro Championship Swanepoel stormed to the top step in the E2 Class and victory overall.

We catch up with Swanepoel as he experiences what could possibly be his most rewarding season yet:

Tell us about your experience of stepping onto the top step of the E2 podium for the first time since your injury.

It's really awesome to be back racing upfront! It was a really big boost for me. It showed me that all the hours I've put in and the pain I've gone through has definitely paid off. I've gotten so much support from PEPSON PLASTICS HUSQVARNA RACING who never stopped believing in me through these past 18 months.

What have been some of the stand-out moments of your comeback this season?

Until recently I've just started to be able to use my clutch with one finger as before! I didn't have enough strength in my hand so when I see these little breakthroughs it's a huge step forward for me mentally. There have been so many times I've thought to myself – “I don’t know how much longer I can go on like this", but the tough days have definitely made me stronger and helped me get to this point.

What are the dreams as a hard enduro rider that have kept you fighting?

The dreams and goals have never changed - 2018 was going to be the year I gave it a proper go overseas. Everything was planned and I had some great people backing me, but it wasn't meant to be. I'm getting back to full strength now so Roof will be the first big go! I'll try do a few overseas races too and I’ll also be going for the E2 championship. Watching all the guys racing overseas and seeing them doing so well has definitely been exciting and motivating for me to get back to that level.

What are your ambitions for the Roof of Africa this year?

I have no doubt this year's event is going to be the best run Roof of Africa I've been to. We got a taste of how the guys from Live Lesotho put on a top-class event - so I can't wait! Roof has generally been a good event for me that I've done well at so I'm excited. I'm definitely going to make sure I come into this year's event in the best condition possible. The goal is to make every day at Roof count - making sure I'm up there each day and try fight for the top step.
