MALAN PULLS OFF THE NEAR-IMPOSSIBLE IN CAPE TOWN

MALAN DEFIES THE ODDS TO HOLD ONTO CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD

“In all my 40 years of racing – I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like this…” – Fred Fensham

The words of Husqvarna South Africa’s Brand Manager were repeated by every onlooker who witnessed the second round of the National Motocross Championship on Saturday. In a near-impossible feat, Maddy Malan managed to race with a flat rear tyre to hold onto his lead in the premier MX1 Class.

After winning the first moto, an overall victory looked promising as the rider set off with the holeshot in the final heat. His streak of bad luck started with a crash, but Malan managed to recover fast enough to work his way back to the front of the pack.

It was at this point that disaster struck and his tyre went flat. With a fierce determination to defend the red plate, the Q4 Fuel Husqvarna Racing star threw caution to the wind and continued to race for another 12 minutes. After crossing the finish line in second and walking away with second overall, an elated Malan enthused, “We still got the points lead and I’m just getting started! There’s so much more hard work ahead but I can’t wait. I feel amazing on my Husqvarna machine!”

Adding the excitement at the Husqvarna camp was yet another victory from young gun Neil van der Vyver.

With a win in every moto he’s competed in this season, it’s safe to say that van der Vyver is taking the 65cc Class by storm. It was a stand-out second round for the youngster as he set off to conquer the familiar Cape Town track. With big jumps, ruts, and sand in store van der Vyver put on an impressive show in front of his hometown supporters.

“I know this track really well and so many people came out to support me today. It was so good to win in front of all of them and hold onto the red plate!” he said.

Ending the day off some solid points in the bag was MX2’s Nick Adams.

As a new recruit to the team, the rider has grabbed the opportunity to race for Husqvarna with both hands. He fought tooth and nail with nine-time national champion Kerim Fitz-Gerald to snatch up third in the first moto.

With a fourth place in the final heat, Adams only narrowly missed the podium to finish fourth overall. Having watched the rider work his way back from an injury, a proud Fensham commented, “Nick gave everything he could today on a track that was far from home. This rider is in for big things in 2019!”
