Former national MX1 champion Todd Waters has capped off an incredibly successful weekend of racing by finishing third overall at the second round of the 2022 Australian ProMX Championship in Mackay.

Former national MX1 champion Todd Waters has capped off an incredibly successful weekend of racing by finishing third overall at the second round of the 2022 Australian ProMX Championship in Mackay.

After earning podium results during the Australian Off-Road Championship (AORC) rounds in the days prior, Waters put in a committed performance aboard his Husqvarna FC 450 to finish the weekend with a hard-fought third position in MX1.

From the beginning of the day Waters established himself as real contender with the fastest provisional qualifying time, then finished sixth in the Top 10 Shootout to confirm gate selections.

Early in the opening MX1 moto, Waters found himself outside of the top-five, but capitalised on a series of errors from riders in front of him to work his way into third position before the halfway stage. That's where he would remain.

In the second MX1 outing, Waters jumped into fifth position and found himself in a heated battle with racers both ahead and behind him, but was able to make a late pass as the track deteriorated to finish fourth, sealing third overall.

Over in the highly-competitive MX2 class, Husqvarna Racing Team’s Dylan Wills finished the day in a much-improved fourth overall after a dramatic round of racing.

In the first moto, Wills made a strong start and completed the opening laps in fourth position, but found a serious turn of pace midway through the race and charged his way to third. He surrendered a position as the laps wore on, but still finished with an impressive P4 result.

Rain fell early in the second MX2 outing, but Wills and his FC 250 again started well to round the first turn in fourth place. A small error midway through the race saw him lose one spot, but from there he produced consistent laps to finish fifth in the race and fourth overall.

The third round of the Australian ProMX Championship is set for Wodonga, VIC, on 1 May. Waters is still third in the MX1 standings, with Wills climbing to fifth position in the MX2 points.

Todd Waters: “I came into this weekend a bit nervous that it could cost me a lot of points, but today’s performance is definitely something I’m proud of. I didn’t get the best starts, but I was able to dig deep and work through the fields in both motos. My legs gave out on me at the end of the first race, but I had a good massage, then ensured I stayed hydrated for the second moto. I thought I had a lap or two more in that race than we actually did, so I was a bit disappointed I didn’t put on my late charge sooner, but I was so stoked to get on the box today! I feel stronger and fitter than I ever have and this result has given me a lot of confidence heading into Wodonga.”

Dylan Wills: “Today was definitely better than the first round, but I’m going to try and focus on a new strategy for qualifying so that I can start the day with a better gate pick. In saying that, I still had two good starts. I rode pretty solidly in the first race and put in two really good laps and I could see I was catching the leader, but with the lack of racing, I got too excited, the humidity got to me, and I ended up just surviving to the finish-line. I got another good start in the second race, but I didn’t have that extra few percent that the leaders had, so was realistic with myself and rode it home for some good points.”
