Rockstar Energy Husqvarna made their way to Gqeberha this weekend for the second round of the National Motocross Championship. In one of the most highly anticipated races of the season, riders went head-to-head at Rover – the sandiest motocross track South Africa has to offer.

It was another successful event for leading rider David Goosen, who finished second overall in MX1 and fourth overall in MX2. While Goosen has certainly set himself up in a good position to fight for both championships, the rider is eager to start tasting victory.

“I know that consistency is key and that we’re still very early into the championship, but I want to start banging out some wins soon. Rover is never an easy race – one moment you’re on the pace and in the next you’re completely off. I’m happy with the fitness and pace I had this weekend, but some riders just had a bit more in the tank in terms of speed and confidence on the day,” explained Goosen.

While he is satisfied with his performance this weekend, the rider is determined to stake his claim on the top step of both classes. He added, “It’s only my second big race on the Husqvarna machines and we’re in a really good position to fight for both championships. We’re not miles off and need to keep getting better. I have a clear game plan going forward and want to be closer to the front of the race.”

Teammate Neil van der Vyver had a challenging day in the saddle. The youngster was off to a promising start after qualifying the fastest, but the excitement was short-lived. After working his way upfront to lead the first moto, Van der Vyver was set back by a collision with another rider.

“I was leading and suddenly got taken out. We both crashed, so I got back up and felt like the harder I tried to catch up the more I crashed. The second heat didn’t go much better – I crashed in the first corner and lost my goggles. I eventually found them again and managed to catch back up to fifth,” explained Van der Vyver.

Despite his string of back luck, the rider managed to finish 9th overall and walked away with some valuable points in the bag. Husqvarna South Africa’s Fred Fensham gives a parting shot after a demanding weekend of racing: “Rover has never been a good hunting ground for us. Our two riders really put in an enormous effort in preparation. I’m really happy with David’s MX1 result but we have some work to do in MX2 - an exciting challenge. As for Neil, he certainly had the pace but did not have any luck on his side. I have no doubt he will come back stronger!”
